Stockholm

Stockholm, the “Venice of the North,” is a stunning archipelago city spread across 14 islands, surrounded by the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren. Stroll through Gamla Stan’s historic streets, visit world-class museums like the Vasa Museum, and immerse yourself in Scandinavian culture. Don’t miss Skansen Zoo, especially its aquarium’s impressive reptile exhibit. In the evening, enjoy waterside dining, fresh seafood, and breathtaking sunsets. Discover the best of Stockholm, from Swedish cuisine to unforgettable experiences and cozy stays.

Having lived in Stockholm, I can confidently say that this city truly experiences all four distinct seasons, each offering its own charm and making it a fantastic destination for travelers year-round. Whether it’s the mild summers perfect for outdoor adventures, the colorful spring and autumn with fewer crowds, or the magical winters filled with Nordic charm, Stockholm has something special to offer in every season.

Stockholm Public Transport Guide

1. Transport Modes

Metro (Tunnelbana)

Stockholm’s metro has three lines (red, green, blue) and over 100 stations, operating daily from early morning to midnight.

Buses (Buss)

Buses cover the city and suburbs, linking metro stations to residential areas. City buses run frequently; suburban ones have fewer trips.

Trams (Spårvagn)

Key tram lines include Tvarbanan (circular) and line 7, which connects Djurgården’s major attractions.

Ferries (Färja)

Ferries are essential in this water-rich city. The SL transport card works on Djurgårdsfärjan between Old Town and Djurgården.

Commuter Trains (Pendeltåg)

These connect Stockholm with the suburbs and nearby cities like Uppsala.

2. Ticketing

Stockholm’s public transport uses a unified SL ticketing system.

  • SL Access Card: Rechargeable with single, 24-hour, 72-hour, or 30-day tickets.

  • SL App: Buy mobile tickets.

  • Single Tickets: Available at metro stations, vending machines, 7-Eleven stores, or via the SL App.

3. Ticket Prices

Single Ticket (75 min): ~39 SEK (discounts with SL App or card).

24-Hour Ticket: ~165 SEK.

72-Hour Ticket: ~330 SEK.

30-Day Ticket: ~970 SEK.

Discounts apply for children, students, and seniors.

For tourists, it is recommended to download the SL app for public transport.

4. Transfers & Rules

  • Tickets allow unlimited transfers within the validity period.

  • Metro entry requires scanning a ticket.

  • Bus drivers do not sell tickets; buy in advance or use contactless payment.

  • Metro, trains, and ferries use random ticket inspections—no turnstiles. Fines apply for traveling without a valid ticket.

My recommendation:

If the weather is clear, take the ferries (Färja) to explore Stockholm’s main attractions (see left image). The SL transport card is valid, and the scenery is fantastic—highly recommended!
